When Is Segregation Useful ?

When I first heard this question, my first thought was never. Not letting my mind go further, I was stuck to racial segregation. For me, segregation mustn’t be a method of discrimination. In other words it mustn’t be what racial segregation was and still is.

There are, however, situations when segregation isn’t only acceptable but also useful. If we think of public restrooms, no one would consider it to share it with the other gender, except the partner. Therefore, we all are thankful for having segregation. The same applies to changing cubicles. Thanks to segregation, women and men can change without worrying being observed by the other gender. Segregation, in this case, helps to minimize the threat of sexual harassment.

Thinking of segregation in a broader way makes me realizing that every single person should be segregating in their daily lives. Since the earth faces some future troubles with global warming, we all should be segregating our waste.

Even though the word segregation is a negative thing, or at least considered as negative, it can serve a good purpose. We all have to be careful with segregation because it can be a dangerous thing. But if we handle this tool wise, we can achieve positive things.
