Twitter

Twitter is in everyone’s mind. Everybody is tweeting, even grandfathers and Obama. People feel the need to keep their followers updated about everything even though it does not interest them the least. Everything has to be written down, manifested on one’s Twitter account. “ohhh my god – a big jiant spider just crawled on my pillow!!!!!! Arghhh omg omg omg ewwww omg!!!!!!!!!!!” Nobody is interested in such news, but people have to post that anyways. That somehow explains that a new word concerning twitter has been invented. TPS, tweets per second, indicate how many tweets have been posted on a certain event. This is quite disturbing, because that means there are a lot of these tweets. As an example, Beyoncé’s performance at the MTV VMAs had 8868 TPS. Almost 9000 people a second (!) were talking about Beyoncé online! Don’t they have more important things to do?

Social networks could become a problem in the future. People talk to their friends through their accounts on Twitter and Facebook. They don’t call them and tell them what happened. They have to inform everyone in their “hemisphere”. It goes that far that people are addicted to these websites. If you keep some people away from Facebook for one day, they will go nuts. People lose their social skills. Smartphones allowed them to update their status or their tweets anytime they want to. They no longer need a computer for it. Therefore, people cannot sit face to face at a table and talk. They don’t know how to communicate with each other without these virtual platforms.

Nevertheless, social networks also have some benefits. I have to admit that I use them too. Facebook helps me to keep in touch with family and friends back in Switzerland. I use twitter only as a follower, with the words from the article: “Paying attention to those people [who are hyperconnected].” Therefore, it is only some kind of news channel for me.

We are not allowed to neglect dangers that can be held by social networks. People need to use them cautiously. Further on they should not let it take control of their life. If it keeps them away from doing other things, something has to be done.

Valuable item

It is likely the most personal and most useful thing I've ever owned. Although it has been replaced several times due to the steady technological advancements , it has always been a loyal companion waiting in my pocket to help me. The reason why this gadget has such a high significance is (maybe) that I can use it in almost every situation; consequently it beckmes very intimate.
It has a beautiful, timeless design, which is even exposed in the Museum of Modern Art. The built quality is, compared to other devices on the market, marvellous. Made out of two glass panels on the front- and the backside, held together by a stainless steel frame, it sets new standarts.
The high utility combined with this groundbreaking drsign, make the Iaphone really important to me.

Valuable Item, From Ms. Im(Perfect)

Valuable Item
I love how much independence this small piece of plastic gives me. Even though it is small, it contains a great deal of my most personal information:  my name, a signature, a card number. There are features that allow me to pay without cash, which is of great importance to me.  I feel it is much safer than carrying around cash.
This little piece of plastic is always there to help me out of any given situation, such as an emergency.
It helps me to make material dreams become reality.
This freedom, to be able to pay without carrying money, makes one more spontaneous and less dependent on ATMs or banks for liquid money.  In this way, I feel more independent and free to live in the moment.

A valuable personal item

Even though my I-phone is a valuable item it has also a significant meaning to me. It's white, modern and handy and it is a great technological thing, which is practical and can help a person with any question one has.. Beside this, it is also a very personal thing because one can save all appointments, personal documents and memories on it. This item doesn't only have a great personal value for me, but also for my friends, with whom I can keep in touch because of the possibilities this item brings with it.

My most valuable personal item

My beautiful ring shows my committement to my wife. The ring is round and made of silver and gold. We exchanged our rings on our wedding day and it reminds me always of that beautiful and romantic day. But it's not only a symbol of our marriage, it's a reminder of our relationship before marriage as well.
As our names are engraved in the ring, it's a very personal item which expresses our love for eachother.

My most valuable personal item

I would be lost without this multifunctional marvel since it contains all my e-mails, pictures and music or in other words my life. Even if it is not very valuable in terms of the actual value of the materials used or the production costs (which are both very low in China), it is very valuable to me. It only has one button and therefore a handy touch screen which makes it very userfriendly. One can use it in many different ways, such as a music player o, an internet browser or the initial function as a phone. Since it has all this information in it, it can reveal a lot about the personality of its owner. Therefore, it would not only reveal a lot about me if it was stolen, but I would also have lost a lot of memories.

An Item of Personal Significance

From, Ms. Independent

One item, which is of great significance for me is a necklace that I got for my confirmation.  It’s a present I got from my grandma and that’s why it is that important to me. It’s a silver necklace with a quite big heart pendant. This pendant is adorned with many shiny stones.  Although it’s a very beautiful necklace the reason why it is so significant is another one.  The necklace I’m talking about is very important to me because always I wear it; it remains me of my grandma. On one side she showed me what I mean to her with this present, and on the other side it shows me now how much she meant to me. It’s the one thing that is always near me even though my grandma isn’t anymore…

Since my arrival to New York, I discovered just how much I love my notebook. It is dark-grey and has the typical, edgy form of a notebook. Mine is a little bigger than regular ones at this time, therefore it is heavier too. But that is totally fine, because this gadget makes everything so much easier. I can write my journal entries without the use of too much paper. Further on, I can save documents, with notes or important information. I do not have to remember everything, I just can write it down. Even though I need power for my laptop to work, it is kind of green, since I do not need as much paper as I used to.

In addition, I can go online and chat with my friends. That is the main reason, why I really treasure my HP notebook. It is something like a connection to my family and friends back in Switzerland.  Technology  made it possible that we can keep in touch over the big distance in between. Moreover, the integrated  webcam allows us to see each other, or at least they can see me.

This little all-round talent can entertain me to. If I am bored, I just watch series online or play games.  As long there is power I can charge the battery, I’m totally fine. Well, I’m okay without this gadget too. It does not go that far, that I can’t live without these things anymore. But still, they make things easier, and they help to stay connected and sometimes communication can be kept thanks to e-mails, Facebook or  Skype.

Almost everything I need is combined in that little, quite expensive (not anymore) electronic device.  The best thing for me is that I can keep in touch with my beloved ones, even if I’m far away.

If I had to pick the most prized item in my room in Zürich, given that my phone and my laptop are here with me, I would pick my closet. From the outside it may not seem very appealing to the eye, but when it comes to the treasures it is hiding, it is the most beautiful item in my room. It is a light brown wooden wardrobe which has mirrors on its doors. There are tons of pictures stuck on the side panels, which remind me of all the people I care about and great moments I had with them. On the closet there are cardboard boxes which contain shoes and large bags purses. Needless to say, that these are probably of one my most precious and most loved things in my room. And there are even more to find when I open my closet.

It is not valuable because of all the everyday clothes; it is the extraordinary pieces that make it valuable. I can easily connect every piece of clothing with a place or a time. Not only can I associate good memories but also sad ones. A lot of them are in my possession since many years and would tell so much about me if only they could speak. From my point of view outfits can help to express oneself and therefore I can often  make a statement through my clothes and I do not mean that in a “fashion victim”-kind of way since I do not have designer clothes.

In conclusion, it may seem very superficial to pick my closet as the most valuable item in my room but when it is seen from the perspective that it can speak volumes about my personality it really is a valuable item.

One of my most personal items is a tennis racket which I destroyed during a tennis match. The grip of the racket is white and after the incident separated of the rest of the racket, which is black. I keep it in a shelf in my living room as a symbol of my bad behavior during this match. By seeing it every day, it should remind me of this action to do better in future. Although I can't use this racket anymore to play tennis, it has an emotional value for me as it has helping me to control my emotions better.
